On May 5, 2018, the Converse Public Library hosted their first annual “Mini-Con”. In celebration of National Free Comic Day, the purpose of “Mini-Con” was to raise awareness of literacy development through comics and pop culture. The event featured free activities and snacks, as well as a Cosplay Contest.
Comic books filled the shelves of the Converse Public Library. Young attendees had the opportunity to read while taking a break from other activities.
This sweet Supergirl took time out from saving the world to read a comic with her grandmother.
“I wanted to put together an event that showed kids that reading can be fun,” said library assistant Hannah Norman. “It warms my heart to see them actually enjoying books.”
Even a Pokémon Trainer could join in on the fun at the various arts and crafts stations.
Spider-Girl stayed camera-ready while mingling with other superheroes.
The attendees of “Mini-Con” were in the presence of royalty as Rapunzel sat on her personal throne.
The cute yet shy Caleb Garcia aka Ray from “Ghostbusters” won the Cosplay Contest with his outstanding costume.
Wolverine made a last minute appearance to battle any willing challenger.

Every attendee was gifted with two free comic books in honor of National Free Comic Book Day. The comic books were donated by Alamo City Comics.

Hi Jenise,
My name is Hannah Norman from the Converse Public Library. I planned and organized the Mini-Con 2018 event that you reported on. Great post by the way! I wish I had stumbled upon this sooner, we could have shared it with our City Council during our last town hall meeting. If you ever need any more information about what we are doing or if you need quotes from staff or our volunteers/vendors, just let me know. Thank you!
