As part of my ongoing multimedia series exploring the country music scene in San Marcos, Texas, I have created three data visualisations centered around the city’s live music scene. This data visualizes the artists, venues, and live music formats shaping the local scene and the creative community at Texas State University. The visualizations below offer a look at where live music is happening, what genres are being played, and highlights a historical venue in San Marcos.
Live Music Venues in San Marcos
The first visualization displays live music venues in San Marcos that regularly host performances. San Marcos offers many opportunities to experience live music, and this visualization highlights how many establishments in the city provide this experience. Venue information, including descriptions, locations, and photographs, were sourced from publicly available listings and verified event lineups compiled by Visit San Marcos. These establishments are consistent local stops where live music is frequently featured, meaning visitors have a high chance of encountering live music during peak evening or weekend hours.
This visual is interactive, scroll down to see the venue name and description, click the arrow to see a new venue, or navigate through the map.
Genre Breakdown of Live Performances
San Marcos hosts an eclectic mix of live performances, from traditional Texas country to late-night DJ sets to lively rock shows. This visualization provides a breakdown of genres found within performances in San Marcos from November 26, 2025, to December 9, 2025. This data is from Visit San Marcos and only includes publicly available listings. There were 58 total performances within this data set. Within the data set, 6 of the performance genres were undetermined, as no public genre information could be found for them. Since no public genre information could be located for these 6 acts, they were omitted from the visualization to maintain clarity.
Cheatham Street Warehouse Timeline
One of the most historic venues in San Marcos, Texas, is Cheatham Street Warehouse, opened in 1974 by Kent Finlay. This venue has not only launched countless country artists’ careers, such as George Strait, Stevie Ray Vaughn, and Randy Rogers, but continues to support young artists with traditions like Kent Finlay’s Songwriter Circle. The visualization below explores the venue’s historical importance and continued role in shaping Texas country music culture.

San Marcos is a go-to live music destination in Central Texas, shaped as much by intimate venues as by communitry driven performance formats. The visuals above show a scene that continues to evolve nightly across stages supported by local musicians, touring artists, and preservation efforts like those from the Cheatham Street Music Foundation. Proving that every night brings another act to the story.
