The 2nd annual Dia De Los Muertos 5K Run was held Oct. 30. It was an event celebrating the memory of loved ones while raising money for the Johnnie T. Morales scholarship fund, a nonprofit providing funding to selected San Marcos High School graduates.

The runners start the 5k race at the Hernandez Elementary School. Alex Hopper, number 2730, won 1st Place in the Male 13-19 yrs category.
Elsie Romano has been helping with the race since its inception. Romano says it’s part of her culture and it’s great that more people are hearing about it. “Most people think of skulls and they think the scary part of it.” She emphasized the tradition being a celebration of life “instead of it being evil spirits.”
Runner Chrissy Fink, on the right, found out about the race on Facebook. “It seems like a good cultural experience and a tight community that came together to do this.”
Jessica Manzanares has been on the planning committee for three years and this is her second year being the mascot, known as La Catrina. “Death isn’t supposed to be scary. We want to make [corpses] very beautiful and we take pride in it.” Manzanares woke up almost three hours before the race to create the intricate design.
With a homemade sign, Lily Machacado attended the race to support her mother. “I love to make signs, its just a way of supporting her and I think it makes people laugh.”

A tree is decorated with paper butterflies with the names of those who are being remembered on Dia de los Muertos.
From the event decorations to the awards, it’s hard to forget the race’s theme. As Sylvia Cruz, the registration coordinator, said, “Our medals, our awards are very unique.”
